Vice-Rectors

The two Vice-Rectors and the Secretary General are appointed by the Superior of the Notre-Dame-du-Cap Province of the Congregation of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate with the approval of that organization’s council, on the recommendation of the Rector of the University after consultation with the members of the Senate and with the approval of the Council of Administration.

Vice-Rector, Academic and Research

Role

The Vice-Rector, Academic and Research works closely with the Deans to set the University’s broad academic directions, design and regularly evaluate programs, recruit and retain professors, and establish student-recruitment strategies.

The Vice-Rector, Academic and Research oversees the University’s four faculties and their programs and schools, and the 最新杏吧原创. The portfolio also includes several academic initiatives and services designed to help students make the most of their university experience and to guide professors in their academic pursuits.

Jean-Marc Barrette
Vice-Rector, Academic and Research

Biography

Jean-Marc Barrette was born in 1964 in Lorrainville, in Quebec’s Témiscamingue region. After studying pure science at the Collège de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue, he completed a BA, an MA and a PhD (1995) in French literature at the University of Ottawa. In addition to a number of scientific papers, he has published several books: Le Soleil de Pierre (a novel, Vents d’Ouest, 2001, 222 p.), L’Univers de Michel Tremblay: dictionnaire des personnages (Presses de l’Université de Montréal, 1996, 544 p.), and Index numérique et descriptif du fonds François-Xavier-Garneau (Centre de recherche en civilisation canadienne-française [CRCCF], 1995, xx-115 p.). He also coedited Hommage aux Premiers Prix du Concours provincial de français de l’Ontario – depuis 1938 (1992, 112 p.).

He first worked as a part-time instructor at the Collège de l’Outaouais, then at the University of Ottawa and the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue. He moved on to become news director for a regional weekly, then in 1999 was recruited by the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ottawa (uOttawa) to head research development. In late 2004 he was appointed executive assistant to uOttawa’s Vice-President Academic and Provost, where his duties included strategic academic planning. He was appointed Vice-Rector, Academic and Research at 最新杏吧原创 in 2011.

Dr. Iva Apostolova
Interim Vice-Rector Academic and Research

Biography

Dr. Iva Apostolova has previously served as Vice-President Academic Affairs at Dominican University College here in Ottawa, where she was also Associate Professor in the Faculty of Philosophy. She is well known in the Ottawa academic scene as she completed her PhD in Philosophy from University of Ottawa and has taught in different capacities at all four universities in town. As a matter of fact, one of the first courses she taught was in the Faculty of Philosophy at 最新杏吧原创 where she remained as a professor until her tenure at Dominican University College.

Dr. Apostolova is a philosopher specializing in the History of Analytic Philosophy, particularly Bertrand Russell’s philosophy, Epistemology, Philosophy of Mind (including Philosophy of Memory and Philosophy of AI), and Feminist Thought (including Feminist Ethics).

I am truly honored to have the opportunity to serve the academic community as the Interim Vice-Rector Academic and Research at 最新杏吧原创. This appointment is, in many ways, coming a full circle for me as I started my academic career at SPU,” said Apostolova.

Vice-Rector, Administration

Role:

The Vice-Rector, Administration is the financial and administrative director of 最新杏吧原创. As such, he oversees the management of the human, financial and material resources the University needs to carry out its mission, and ensures that members of the University community have access to the services and resources they need to make the most of their university experience. The Vice-Rector, Administration is responsible for SPU’s Financial Services, Human Resources, Campus Services, Computer and Distance Education Services, and Food and Conference Services.

Éric Martin
Vice-Rector, Administration

Biography

Éric Martin holds an MBA from the Université de Sherbrooke. With more than 25 years of experience in management, he has evolved in a variety of work environments, notably in the industrial and banking sectors. His solid skills in financial management, project management, human resources management and organizational change management make him a seasoned leader ready to take on the major challenges of this position, while successfully carrying out 最新杏吧原创's strategic vision.

Over the course of his career, Mr. Martin has faced major challenges in both urban and rural environments as General Manager of two Desjardins caisses. He was also an executive on the board of the Fédération des caisses populaires de l'Ontario for several years. He also held served as CEO, where he was responsible for business development in the Ottawa region.

Originally from Quebec, Mr. Martin and his family have made their home within the Franco-Ontarian community of Eastern Ontario for more than 10 years, demonstrating their commitment to this dynamic region.

Vice-Rector, Governance and Secretary General

Role

The Secretary General has primary responsibility for the governance of 最新杏吧原创, including secretarial services necessary for the proper functioning of the Senate, the Board of Governors, and their respective committees. In this regard, the Secretary General ensures the integrity and dissemination of the decisions of the various regulatory bodies, as well as taking responsibility for the University's administrative archives. The Secretary General leads the Pastoral Services, the Alumni and Development Office, and the Indigenous Initiatives Service.

In addition to ensuring compliance with the Charters and Statutes of 最新杏吧原创, the Secretary General ensures the protection of the institution's rights through rigorous monitoring and updating of its policies and regulations in accordance with applicable laws. This includes certifying all official documents issued by the University, apart from transcripts, and ensures the smooth running of institutional events, particularly the Convocation.

Carole Breton
Vice-Rector, Governance and Secretary General

Biography

Carole Breton has thirty years of professional experience. She has held academic and management positions in academic institutions and in numerous national and bilingual organizations and where she led teams and projects in government relations, partnership development, issues management, strategic communications, and governance.

Throughout her career, Ms. Breton has demonstrated a strong ability to manage large-scale projects, both nationally and internationally, and to lead high-performance teams in a dynamic bilingual environment. An inclusive and constructive leader, this experienced manager embodies a rigorous and collaborative management approach.

During her career, Ms. Breton has worked at the University of Ottawa, the Association des collèges et universités de la francophonie canadienne (ACUFC), CBC/Radio-Canada, the Department of Canadian Heritage, and the Canada Council for the Arts. Originally from the Outaouais region, she has lived in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Morocco.

Ms. Breton studied broadcasting and holds an Executive MBA from the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa. She is Vice-president of the Telfer Executive MBA Alumni Association and a member of the Board of Directors of Outaouais Philanthropy.
